What is Music Together?
Music Together® is a music and movement approach to early childhood music development for infant, toddler, preschool, and kindergarten children and their parents, teachers, and other primary caregivers. Originally offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement. The Music Together approach develops every child's birthright of basic music competence by encouraging the actual experiencing of music rather than the learning of concepts or information about music. It began as an educational project of the Center for Music and Young Children and is now being taught internationally. Music Together CD's, songbooks, and classroom techniques enjoy widespread use by teachers and families both directly and indirectly involved in Music Together.

Basic Principles of the Music Together Philosophy:
  • All children are musical.
  • Therefore, all children can achieve basic music competence. The CMYC (Center for Music and Young Children) defines basic music competence as audiation and expression of meter by rhythmically accurate movement and tonality by in-tune singing.
  • The participation and modeling of parents and caregivers, regardless of their musical ability, is essential to a child’s musical growth.
  • This growth is best achieved in a playful, developmentally appropriate, non-performance-oriented learning environment that is musically rich yet immediately accessible to the child’s - and the adult’s! - participation.

Our Classes:
Music Together Chattanooga is located at 1831 Hickory Valley Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421. We offer our classes within the School of Fine Arts at Ridgedale.
We offer family classes for children from birth through five and the grownups who love them (parents, grandparents, nannies, aunts, uncles...)
Siblings are welcome and encouraged to attend the same class.
Each semester includes 10 weekly, 45 minutes classes of lively singing, rhyme and rhythm play, instrument play, and movement. (Summer semesters are 6 weeks long.)
Makeup classes are available should you miss a class during your semester.
All classes are taught by a trained Music Together teacher who will lead you on the adventure of making music with your little ones!
Classes are structured with enough ritual and novelty to make children feel comfortable but fully engaged.
Classes are filled with Parent Education Moments. Each moment of our class is intentional. While we cannot take the time to explain every single activity during every class, there will be many educational moments to help you understand why we do what we do, and how it is important to your child's musical development.
Your own musical abilities in class will not impact your child's ability to learn! As parents, we shape only our children's disposition toward music. If we have fun, they will too!
